Wakeup call from the stolen and forgotten

The government took the right steps by reaching out to me with an apology and financial compensation. They also assured the Goodna Girls that legal action was still an option. Former Mental Health Commissioner Lesley expressed her commitment to doing what was morally right, even going as far as threatening resignation if the government didn’t act on our behalf. She indicated that influential individuals were aware of our situation.

I believe this experience demonstrates that there are genuinely principled government officials who are willing to rectify past wrongs. It’s the first time I’ve felt that the government truly meant its apology. Michael Walsh, responsible for approving all government department actions, personally apologized for the mistreatment, even though it occurred over 35 years ago.

I strongly believe in the importance of speaking out and taking action when something is unjust. Holding people accountable in a timely manner is crucial. Transforming injustices into fairness is a wonderful endeavor. If more people tell the truth, our world would be a better place. Since 2011, I’ve been advocating for myself and other vulnerable individuals, running a drop-in center from 9 am to 9:30 pm for 12 years. I established an after-hours emergency accommodation service in response to the absence of such facilities in our area. I’ve also been handling complaints in the South Burnett region when no one else is available to respond. South Burnett Peace of Mind has filled gaps where other services fall short. I am committed to fighting for our community and providing what it requires to thrive.

Since 2012, I’ve been working to secure land and establish a much-needed large complex in our community, running around the clock to assist those in need. Although some find the idea challenging to grasp, I believe that our community deserves these services. We pay our taxes to the council, and they are meant to work for us. Living in a rural area should not be an excuse to deny us essential services.

It’s time to start listening to our community’s residents and addressing their needs.
